Rugby Women Taster Session
Rugby Women taster session By Derick Thomas Clubs through-out Lancashire will participate in a nationwide RFU event this weekend for women and girls from age 15. The free taster sessions for all ages and abilities will take place on Saturday 2nd July and prospective players are encouraged to check the RFU website for their local club. http://www.englandrugby.com/my-rugby/find-rugby/# England Rugby have launched 'Pitch up and Play' their new women and girls’ programme aimed at encouraging women into the sport with inclusive, enjoyable and informative sessions. Charlie Wilcock, 18, started playing rugby at Fleetwood whilst at school and progressed to the Lancashire set-up. The flanker is also part of the current England Women’s Under 20 side. “Rugby is no longer just a sport for men. Participation in women’s rugby has doubled in the past 10 years and England Women are 15-a-side world champions. “I’d encourage girls and women to give rugby a go regardless of age, ability or previous experience. I know Fleetwood ladies, for example, play touch rugby so it isn’t too physical.” The former Cardinal Allen Catholic High School student added rugby offers a great deal to all women no matter their fitness level. “It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played any sport for a long time. Rugby is great if you want to become more active and join a great bunch of like-minded people. "I have made lifelong friends through this sport because of the respect and encouragement we have for one another. “I would have loved to join the 'Pitch up and Play' session at Fleetwood but, unfortunately, I'm at the England under 20's training camp that weekend.” “
