Artificial Grass Pitches

The RFU follows the World Rugby Artificial Rugby Turf Performance Specification. This stipulates the testing and approval procedures which Manufacturers and other entities involved in the installation of artificial playing surfaces must comply with in order for their products to be approved for use in Rugby.

Artificial Grass is recognised as a consistent, durable, and safe playing surface year-round, under constant use and in all kinds of weather. As a result, it enables a tremendous increase in sports and play activity, and the related social and health benefits. Furthermore, every year it saves billions of gallons of water, eliminates the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and recycles millions of used tires that otherwise would go to landfill. As a result of the above benefits the Rugby Football Union have been proactive in funding and advocating their use for the betterment of the game.

The numerous scientific studies conducted by government agencies around the world and undertaken by independent experts all validate the human health and environmental safety of artificial grass and crumb rubber. We hold a bibliography of this research with in-depth findings and data which can be viewed on request.

We take the health, safety, and welfare of artificial grass users very seriously. If an independent agency or testing organisation decides to conduct new objective and science-based research on the safety of artificial grass or crumb rubber, we will assist in any way we can.
